Everything here is built from free, openly-licensed data. Each dataset below is used under the terms shown, with attribution. We publish our own derived indicators (clearly labelled as estimates) but never republish restricted data.
What we never publish: ACARA My School performance data — NAPLAN results and ICSEA comparison/league tables. ICSEA is held only for private validation of our open-data Community Advantage Index and never appears on any page. Our indices are not ICSEA and not official figures.

What we deliberately exclude
- ACARA My School (NAPLAN, ICSEA, enrolments) — ACARA Terms of Use prohibit republishing My School content on any public website, prohibit commercial use, and specifically prohibit building comparative school-performance lists. NAPLAN/ICSEA comparison — the most monetisable layer — is legally unavailable. Only ICSEA values already redistributed under state CC BY datasets are touched, and only for local analysis (see field_sensitivity above).
- Google Places API — Places policy forbids pre-fetching/caching/storing place content except place_id. Usable for live lookups + mandatory Google attribution, but you cannot own/republish the dataset. Not a graph backbone.
- ActiveActivities / Kidspot / commercial directories — Terms prohibit copying/commercial reuse; compilation copyright + Privacy Act exposure under AU law. Build the activities dataset from open sources + owner-submitted listings instead.
Our derived indicators
- Community Advantage Index (CAI) — our estimate of an area's socio-educational advantage from ABS SEIFA (education + occupation). A legal, open-data analogue to school context. Not ICSEA.
- Snapshot score — a transparent, re-weightable blend of Advantage, area Year-12 attainment, attendance and (VIC) university destinations. Not a quality ranking.
- Value-add — attendance relative to what an area's advantage predicts ("punching above its postcode").
- Job outlook — derived from JSA's 5-year projected employment growth.
- Study pathways — indicative occupation → field-of-education → provider matches from the CRICOS course register.
